zerbaijan first made an appearance on the popular European television show Eurovision in 2008. Since Azerbaijan’s first appearance on the program, the country’s contestant(s) have placed within the top ten. In May of 2011, Azerbaijan celebrated when Azerbaijani duet Eldar and Nigar, also known as Ell and Nikki, won the contest with their song “Running Scared.”.

On May 22-26, 2012, Azerbaijan hosted the Eurovision song contest in its capital Baku. Eurovision is the largest musical contest in the world and is viewed by 150 million people. Eurovision Baku 2012 was eventually won by Sweeden, but Azerbaijani contestant Sabina Babayeva delivered an unforgettable top ten performance with the assistance of mugham sensation Alim Gasimov. Azerbaijan has a rich and ancient musical tradition. The country is most famous for its folkloric musical compositions called mugham. The Karabakh Foundation hosted a Eurovision Viewing Party on May 26, 2012 at Levante’s in the Dupont Circle neighborhood in Washington, D.C. The Foundation also participated in a May 25, 2012 Eurovision viewing party in New York City. Eurovision hall
