Rosa Salvatore

Rosa Salvatore

… He was born near Naples in the city Renelle, in June 20, 1615, and was raised in a convent. He was preparing to take holy orders. But soon felt an irresistible attraction to the art and began to study music at first, and then painting.

Guides were last in his first in-law, Frederick. Frankantsone, student X. Ribera, then he Ribera and finally as a batalicheskie painter /battle genre/ in Aniello Falcone. In addition to these artists, the development of Performance talents has greatly contributed to writing those sketches from nature without any help. Eighteen years of age, he set off to wander through Apulia and Calabria, I fell into the hands there the robbers and lived for a while among them, studying their styles and manners, then he worked in Naples.

the potrait of Jahansha

Muzaffaretdin Jahansha (1399-1467),
A portrait that is drawn from the Sultan by Rosa Salvador.

In 1634 he moved to Rome, where he was not slow to buy a famous image of the characteristic, full of life scenes from the life of shepherds, bandits and soldiers, but thanks to his satire and in particular two paintings: “Transience of human life” and “the goddess of happiness, lavished their gifts unworthy”, to such an extent antagonized the Roman society that was supposed to retire in Naples. When the revolution broke out there “Masaniello /Mazaniello/”, he participated in it. (From 1650 – 1660). When he had worked in Florence at the court of the Grand Duke Zh.-K. Francesco I de’ Medici, had been visited time to time from the Rome. Finally, it appeared again in this city, where he died March 15, 1673.

Belonging to the direction of talent to the naturalists of the Neapolitan school of painting, having some affinity with their teachers, Ribera and Falcone, Rose nonetheless showed, with a large variety in the choice of subjects, a lot of originality in their treatment. The paintings on historical themes, he was able to combine the realism of the image with a big heart and a lively composition with a strong expression of the idea.  The best of these paintings is considered a “conspiracy of Catiline” (Gallery of the Pitti Palace, Florence). Among other works of Roses in this way is particularly worthy of attention: “Angel and Tobias” and “phenomenon Saul shade of Samuel” (in the Louvre Museum in Paris), “Jonah in Nineveh,” and “Cadmus and Minerva” (in the Copenhagen gallery), “The Crucifixion” (in Braunschweig museum), “Prometheus” (in the gallery of the Hague), “The Prodigal son”, “Ulysses and Nausicaa” and “Democritus and Protagoras” (in the Imperial Hermitage) and some others.

His work on the portrait of “Roses” are very characteristic and expressive, which is raised in front of them show that their similarities encounter. In those landscapes, which came out from under his hand during his stay in Florence, for example, in a large seaside form, located in the gallery Colonna in Rome, painting experts perceive the influence of Claude Lorrain. ….

In other paintings of this kind is noticeable is some artificiality and lethargy.

But Rose is a superb, completely original masters, imbued with poetry when depicts the rugged mountains, wild gorges, deaf forest thickets, especially when writing on the canvases of small value.

There are many of his paintings, in which the landscape plays a minor role, but the main contents are human figures – mostly figures of soldiers and brigands.

Such pictures can be seen in the Imperial Hermitage ( “Soldiers playing dice”), in Vienna, Munich, The Hague and others.

Finally, Rosa beautifully written very complex picture of battles, where there is a remarkable example in the Louvre museum in Paris.

Regarding the color R. must say that he does not differ a great luster, but very pleasant in its warmth and consistency of light and shade.

Rosa was carved at the end of his life. Altogether, they executed 86 etchings own compositions, many of which can be attributed to the best creations of the artist and in good prints are very much appreciated by amateurs of prints, are, for example, “St. William the Hermit”, “Plato and his disciples”, “Warrior, sitting on a hill” and others.

Rose wrote several dramas, which sometimes appeared as an actor, and a number of caustic satires.

Biographies of multilateral artist Fr. published. Baldinucci (new Venetian ed., 1830), Fiorillo (with the application of satire P.; “Poetic Art”, Gottingen, 1785) and C. Cantu (Milan, 1844). …
